Touch My Brum 2018

Words by Ash Martin – Sheffield Vulcans Chairman

So the Vulcans headed to Birmingham this Saturday to play in their first ever Touch Rugby tournament. To say we were nervous was an understatement. This was our first foray into the wider IGR family!
We had only practised the rules and techniques so were unsure how we would fare. Our first match was at 10:30 so we could watch a few matches and check out the flow of the matches, which tend to be fast and furious!

The morning was split into four matches and depending on your score would depend on what tier you were placed in. We played against the “Trunters” a combination of Liverpool Tritons and Leeds Hunters first. It was a good game! We had the rules down and even managed to score a try! (thanks patrick), however ultimately lost the match. We did have small issues such as not moving back far enough when a touch was placed on the opposing team but we took it on board. Everyone has to start somewhere right?
Our next three games were against the

Manchester Shooters
Reading Renegades and
Birmingham Bulls (the gracious hosts)
We lost all four but we did manage to score a few tries with the match against the Renegades, the closest we came to a victory.
Lunch break!

After lunch we were placed into the Eden Tankard group. This was the knock out stages!
We played the Shuttlerush Jaguars. These guys played very well and it was close but we finally managed to win our first match with a debut try from Liam!

We were through to the next round! Our next match was against our neighbours the Leeds Hunters. they were on a totally different level, it was amazing to play against. They could move and turn so fast and evaded most of our touches. We did however managed to break through their defence and score a try with a rather slick (probably a fluke) over the shoulder pass from Andreas, thankfully caught by Patrick.

We did lose the match and were knocked out but played in the playoffs against the Shuttlerush Panthers to see who came third. At this point we were shattered but we played on utilising all our subs. it was 2-1 to them until we scored a try right near the end. The match was declared a draw. Coming joint third was (we feel) a great accomplishment.

The day was amazing! friendly atmosphere and was great to meet some of our fellow IGR teams. We are totally geared up for the upcoming season and for Touch my Brum next year!
Thanks again to the Birmingham Bulls for being truly amazing hosts.
