Sheffield Vulcans VS Liverpool Tritons

The Sheffield Vulcans hosted their first ever home game this weekend and were thrilled to welcome the Liverpool Tritons to Hallam University Sports Park.

The weather looked a bit grey but both teams took to the field and remained dry for a superb 80 minutes of rugby. Both teams welcomed new players to the pitch for the first time, led by more experienced players from both squads.

It wasn’t long before Liverpool took the lead with a try and conversion. The Vulcans fought back and within a few minutes had 7 points to their name too. Throughout the first half, both teams saw some superb tackles and phases that kept the ball swapping ends frequently. With stronger handling skills on their side, Liverpool took the lead again with several more tries.

After a debrief from both coaches and captains, the teams swapped sides and the second half was just as eventful as the first. With some Tritons scoring in their debut game, and the Vulcans building experience in several players in new positions, everyone one the pitch had fun, worked hard, and took something positive away from the game.

The Vulcans managed another try and conversion, but ultimately the final score gave the Liverpool Tritons a win of 60 – 14.

Going forward into the rest of the season, which has several home games in the fixtures calendar, the Vulcans will be focusing on stamina, handling, and stopping players in their tracks with leg tackles, no matter their size or speed.

The Sheffield Vulcans Man of the Match was awarded to Joel Walker for his consistent tackles and effort as hooker. The Liverpool tritons chose Felix Barr as their Vulcan of the Match for his energy, experience and taking out their Director of Rugby in a brilliant tackle.

D*ck of the Day went to Sam “Farmer” Felvus (who trained with the Sheffield Vulcans last Summer). Both captains just felt it appropriate, but especially seeing as he passed to referee not once, but twice during the game.

Many Thanks to Hallam University Sports Park for hosting our first home game of the season, and also to Mulberry Tavern and Queer Junction, two of our sponsors, for showing some of the Tritons what a Sheffield night out has to offer.

Take a look at photos and this short video with some of our favourite moments of the game…
