Sheffield Vulcans VS Newcastle Ravens

On a surprisingly hot and sunny day in the North East of England, the Sheffield Vulcans and the Newcastle Ravens took to the pitch for the first game of 2018/2019 season.

Both teams were armed with more experienced players and a group of new players to their squads and the sport of Rugby. The game saw 6 Sheffield Vulcans make their debut for the club with some only been playing rugby for a matter of weeks.

The game started with high energy and a real commitment to the game from all 30 people on the pitch. With possession fairly equal and the ball spending much of the first 20 minutes in the middle of the field. The Ravens took the lead with a try but it wasn’t long until the Vulcans came back with a try by Nefyn Edwards. Captain, Michael Hudson made the conversion taking the Vulcans into the lead just before the end of the first of four 20 minute periods.

Throughout the rest of the game, both teams showed their skill in tackling, strong defensive tactics, and enthusiasm to have fun whilst playing Rugby. The Ravens scored several times more to take the game in their favour but were forced to work hard to get through a barricade of Vulcans at several opportunities. From Props to Full Back, all members of the Vulcans had a fantastic game and all left the field with a feeling of pride in the fight they put up against the Newcastle Ravens.

With a final score of 40-7, the Ravens take the win, but will have to work even harder to win again when they visit Sheffield in February 2019.

In a game that introduced many Vulcans to lifting line outs and contested scrums, the team are incredibly proud of the strong start to the season and are looking forward to playing other teams throughout the year, and developing their attack and defence even more as the season continues.

Vulcans Man of the Match was shared by two new additions to the squad. Daniel Winfield, who only started playing Rugby at the end of July, took in his role as Rightwing well and got stuck in with several tackles, rucks and runs with the ball through the game. Nefyn Edwards used his knowledge of the game, and high energy to run to all corners of the pitch and score his first try for the Sheffield Vulcans. ‘D*ck of the Day’ went to Simon Green for an overly enthusiastic tackle that unfortunately left a Raven with a bloody nose.

Many Thanks to the Newcastle Ravens for organising a superb match to kick off the season and for setting up a fantastic night out sampling the Newcastle LGBT+ scene.
