Saturday 31st August saw the Vulcans made the trip across Yorkshire to compete in the first ever Humber 10s Tournament, hosted by Hull Roundheads at the impressive Hull Ionians RUFC ground. Celebrating the Roundhead’s 1st Birthday, a team of Vulcans were happy to get involved. Alastair Geddes writes about the event and what the Sheffield Vulcans took from the day. Continue reading
Only 8 days after facing our Yorkshire brothers the Leeds Hunters, the Sheffield Vulcans set off across God’s county to play the Hull Roundheads. Formed in August, the Hull Roudnheads are Yorkshire’s latest addition to the IGR community, and facing the Sheffield Vulcans was only their second game.
Unusually bright and sunny for a Sunday morning, both teams warmed up together and looked forward to a day of friendly rugby, and to encourage both teams to develop and grow further.
The Vulcans started strong with some superb defence, and showed off the hard work from training. Protecting rucks, supporting the ball carrier, and some fantastic tackles showed Hull that the Vulcans would not take it easy on them just because they were new.
The Vulcans worked as a true team and kept strong lines, putting up a real fight to Hull. The score stayed tight and entering the last 20 minutes, the Vulcans led by just one point. Sheffield tries were scored by Julio Jimenez, Nefyn Edwards and Andres Gl.
This game was the first or second appearance for several Vulcans, but these players showed their dedication and enthusiasm for rugby as they dove in head first. Dan Giles made some admirable tackles, and excellent effort in trying to score again when he was held up only inches from the try line. Having only joined the Vulcans in late October, this valiant effort and his efforts in the front row, earned Dan Man of the Match.
Innes MacLeod was awarded D*ck of the Day for his overly dramatic diving try…that was unfortunately over the 5 metre instead. Innes was a power house throughout the match and made dozens of tackles that stopped many Roundheads in their tracks.
In the final minutes, the Hull Roundheads made some impressive runs and put them in place for a win of 29-20. The Vulcans offer a huge congratulations to the Hull Roundheads on a really challenging, tiring, but entertaining and fun game of Rugby. We look forward to our rematch later this season, and getting to know you all as we bond as a Yorkshire IGR team.
