Sheffield Vulcans VS King Cross Steelers

Date: 28th September 2019
Location: Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park, Sheffield

Despite an overcast sky, the ground and weather provided perfect match conditions for the Sheffield Vulcans first home game of the 2019/2020 season. With a full squad and many Vulcans taking to the pitch for the first game with the team, Sheffield’s inclusive rugby club awaited the visitors from London – The Kings Cross Steelers.

The Vulcans took an early lead and maintained the possession of the ball for the lion’s share of the first half. Quickly showing off the strength of the pack, and making use of the speed of the backs, the Sheffield Vulcans powered down the field and scored within the first  six minutes (Ryan Hill).

Following a summer of hard work and recruitment, the Sheffield Vulcans put forward a squad that worked well together and made use of different skills to create a powerful attack that turned over very few balls in the first 40 minutes.

Before the half time whistle, the Vulcans scored an additional six tries (Dan Slinn, Gawain Maroroa Jones , Dan Giles, Mark Morgan, Glenn Allen and another from Ryan Hill.) with the Steelers working hard to push back in defence. With three conversions from Chris Moore, the Sheffield Vulcans ended the first half with a 41 point lead and a real sense of achievement.

The Kings Cross Steelers came out for the second half fighting hard and continuing to put pressure on the Vulcans. Not looking to get comfortable, the Sheffield Vulcans continued to drive through with quick pick-and-go’s and the support of a team working well together. Several players were trying out new positions and a number of players were making their Vulcans debut.

Felix Barr, Glenn Allen and Mark Morgan added 3 more tries to the scoreboard which were converted from various angles by Chris Moore. Following an impress run down the field and a high tackle just feet before the try line, a penalty try was awarded to the Kings Cross Steelers and Ryan Eshelby became the first ever Vulcan to spend 10 minutes in the sin-bin.

Tibble Smith scored his first try for the Sheffield Vulcans before Dan Giles was able to break the Steeler’s line once again for the final try of the game. The final score was Sheffield Vulcans 74 – King’s Cross Steelers 7.

Sheffield Vulcan’s Forward of the Match was awarded to Gawain Maroroa Jones and Back of the Match was given to Mark Morgan. Both showed some superb tackling skills and worked well with the entire squad, communicating plays and encouraging the team to power through for the club’s first win of the season.

The Sheffield Vulcans will travel to London on Saturday 7th December 2019 to play King Cross Steelers 4th XV on their turf.
