Fancy Touch

Whilst many of our IGR brothers were in Dublin taking part in the Union Cup, the Sheffield Vulcans had a jam-packed weekend in Sheffield including our first touch tournament of the summer. We were gutted to miss out on the fun and frolics of the the European IGR get together but we shall make up for it at Bingham 2020 and beyond.

Saturday started bright and early at the Abbeydale Sports Club to register our 3 teams for the Fancy Touch tournament. Despite the weather taking a quick decline, the Vulcans were ready to take on the 2 pools of the touch rugby tournament in our best Star Wars and Star Trek fancy dress.

Taking advantage of our ‘Vulcan’ name, we feel that our sci-fi theme bested the other teams, some of which opted for themes such as “red t-shirts” or aprons. Many of the Vulcans however appreciated the team dressed as sleeveless cops…and we have no idea why.

The Vulcans split into 3 teams and competed throughout the day, including our final match which saw the Vulcans take on the Vulcans, which ironically was the most competitive of the day.

Congratulations go to Joel for his first try in a competitive game with the Vulcans, Jude for their try on their first official appearance with the team, and Phil for his effort and enthusiasm after only a few weeks of being part of the team.

Enjoying a few beers and burgers throughout the day, the Vulcans were happy to take part in the tournament that raises money to support young people between 14-35 to be checked for potential heart defects, followed by necessary treatment and recovery. This year Fancy Touch raised over £3700 and we’re already looking forward to next year, and costume ideas are already being discussed.

Vulcans get full IGR membership!

Sheffield Vulcans are THRILLED to announce that we have been granted full membership to International Gay Rugby.

Since launching in August 2017, the Vulcans have had a superb first season as a club and recruited nearly 20 regular players. Working with coach Andrea Dobson and taking advice from other IGR clubs across the UK, the team have enjoyed weekly training sessions, insane socials and nights out, and the chance to bare all in a naked photoshoot to raise money for Balls to Cancer.

The criteria met for full IGR membership are:

    • Be a primarily gay and / or lesbian identifying rugby club;
    • Support the aims and objectives of IGR;
    • Have a formalised governance structure with constitution and elected officers and have statements related to tolerance and inclusion in their club mission statement;
    • Be registered with their National and Local Rugby unions;
    • Have played at least 3 15s rugby matches in their current or most recent rugby season.
